Cannabis legalised in 4 American states during election

While the majority of the world was watching the Trump vs. Biden showdown, cannabis advocates were counting votes on cannabis legislation in five American states.

Here’s a brief overview of what each state voted on, and who won.

Arizona

Voters in Arizona voted on Proposition 207, which:

  • Legalises the recreational use of cannabis for adults over 21.
  • Allows people to grow 6 pot plants.
  • Introduces a 19% tax on cannabis. 
  • Allows cannabis “criminals” to apply for expungement. 

Proposition 207 passed with 59.80% of the votes. 

Montana 

Montana was voting on Measure I-190, which:

  • Legalises recreational cannabis use. 
  • Allows people to grow 4 pot plants. 
  • Introduces a 20% tax on cannabis. 
  • Allows cannabis “criminals” to apply for expungement. 

Measure I-190 passed with 56.58% of the vote.

New Jersey

New Jersey votes on Public Question 1, legalising cannabis for adults 21+ and creating a Cannabis Regulatory Commission. 

Public Question 1 passed with 66.97%.

South Dakota

South Dakota voted on two pieces of legislation, Amendment A and Measure 26. Measure 26 legalises medical cannabis, while Amendment A:

  • Legalises recreational cannabis for adults 21+.
  • Allows people to grow 3 cannabis plants if they have no local cannabis retailers. 
  • Introduces a 15% sales tax. 

Amendment A passed with 54.18% of the votes and Measure 26 passed with 69.93% of the votes. 

Mississippi

Mississippi voted on Ballot Measure 1 and Initiative 65. Ballot Measure 1 legalised the recreational use of cannabis, while Initiative 65 legalised the medical use of cannabis. 

Ballot Measure 1 passed with 68.92% of the votes and Initiative 65 passed with 75.56%.
