The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) handles just about everything there is in Australia’s medical cannabis industry – licensing, patient approval, medicine registration, classification, and testing of products to make sure they’re up to standard.

They just released two reports covering various cannabis medicines available in Australia, testing them for certain toxins and levels of their stated ingredients.

Toxins tested and their limits included:

  • Aflatoxins – Not more than 2 µg/kg of aflatoxin B1 and not more than 4 µg/kg for the sum of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2
  • Heavy metals – Not more than 3.0 mg/kg of arsenic, Not more than 0.5 mg/kg of cadmium, Not more than 5.0 mg/kg of lead, Not more than 0.5 mg/kg of mercury
  • Ochratoxin A – Not more than 20 µg/kg
  • Pesticides – Not more than the limits specified in Ph Eur 2.8.13

We’re happy to report all the following medicines passed the testing:

  • Cannatrek T15 Flower (Sativa Acadia) 15.0% THC Flos for Inhalation
  • Bedrocan Dried Cannabis Flos for Inhalation (22% THC OAB,2, < 1% CBD OAB)
  • Beacon Medical “THC+F” Dried Flower Bud (THC 20% w/w, <0.1% w/w CBD)
  • MEDCAN CC01 Dried Cannabis Flower (THC 22%, CBD 0.07%)
  • Tilray Whole Flower Dried Cannabis THC 25 (THC 25%, CBD NMT 0.5%)
  • Tilray THC10: CBD10 Whole Flower Dried Cannabis (THC 9.9%, CBD 9.6%)

You can see the full report here.

The second testing done was on paediatric medicinal cannabis products. This followed a law on the minimum and maximum levels of active ingredients in the medicine.

Section 12(2) specifies that the average content of each active ingredient in a representative sample of the product must be not less than 90.0 % and not more than 110.0 % of the stated content of that active ingredient for typical samples used in the paediatric population.

And again, all of the medicines tested passed. This included:

  • Tilray 100 CBD Oral Solution (100mg/mL CBD) – 102.0%
  • Althea CBD100 (CBD 100mg/ml, THC less than 1mg/mL) – 106.9%
  • CDA CBD-240 Oil (CBD 240mg/mL) – 100.9%
  • Entoura CBD 10 Oil (10% CBD, 100 mg/mL) – 102.2%
  • Entoura CBD 20 Oil (20% CBD, 200 mg/mL) – 95.7%
  • GD Cann-C (CBD 100mg/ml) – 100.9%
  • LGP Classic CBD 50 (50mg/mL CBD) – 107.7%
  • MP 100 (CBD 100mg/mL) – 93.9%

You can see the full report here.

The results come after five products last year failed to meet the minimum and maximum requirements.
