Professional development organisation HealthCert Education has launched Australia’s first university-reviewed course focusing on medicinal cannabis.

The company launched the Professional Diploma of Medicinal Cannabis in February this year, as part of a push to improve cannabis education among Australian physicians. HealthCert is a popular provider of education for medical professionals.

The course is aimed at GPs and Doctors who want to work with medical cannabis patients or become authorised prescribers with the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).

It provides a “best-practice roadmap” for doctors, covering medical cannabis eligibility, TGA’s prescribing requirements, modalities of use, dosing and common cannabis medications.

The course was reviewed by Griffith University and is accredited by RACGP and ACRRM – making it unique among a sea of “cannabis universities“.

Although the course will cover the socio-economic issues facing medical cannabis patients, it focuses on how medicinal cannabis is used in the management of conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, IBS, multiple sclerosis and cancer-treatment-induced pain.

According to Dr. Joe Kosterich, a course presenter, GP and Medical Advisor to Little Green Pharma, cannabis education is the key to better outcomes for medical cannabis patients. As medicinal cannabis is a stigmatised frontier of medicine, misinformation about cannabis drugs is common among doctors.

High-quality education is the key enabling doctors to understand the role of medicinal cannabis and how to prescribe for and monitor patients.

The course is available to Australian Doctors anytime and is quality assured by the Australian and New Zealand College of Cannabinoid Practitioners (ANZCCP).

It is Australia’s first and only university-reviewed medicinal cannabis program.
