Gold Coast is playing home to the world first trial of improving the lives of patients with motor neuron disease through the use of cannabis oils.
Dr Arman Sabet, a Neurologist at the Gold Coast University Hospital, is leading the trial.
The objective of this study is to see whether this product causes slowing of the progression of the disease.
30 patients, aged between 25 and 75 that have been diagnosed with the disease in the past 2 years will take part in the study. Half will be given cannabis oil, while the other half will receive a placebo.
Researchers hope to see positive effects in the reduction of the symptoms the patients have such as pain, muscle stiffness, and weight loss.
The trial is set to run for 6 months after which the results will be analysed.
