The town of Toowoomba is set to become Queensland’s cannabis capital, as cannabis company Cannatrek literally doubles their Queensland workforce. Cannatrek, one of Australia’s largest procedures of medical cannabis has hired over 400 new employees as part of a plan to expand its Toowoomba facility.

The 16,000 square metre facility produces over 3 tonnes of cannabis a year, growing cannabis from seed and manufacturing medications onsite.

However, Cannatrek won’t be the only cannabis company setting up shop in Toowoomba. Medical cannabis company Asterion Cannabis is also planning a facility in the area, building four new 10-hectare greenhouses capable of producing 500 tonnes of cannabis annually.

These expansions are only the beginning as Cannatrek predicts the demand for medical cannabis in Australia is about to explode dramatically.

As 2020 runs its course, they also plan to expand into Victoria, as they were recently granted Major Project Status for their $160 million cannabis cultivation facility in Shepparton. Once opened, this new 160,000 square metre facility will produce 160 tonnes of medical cannabis each year. As Cannatrek’s Director of Research and Compliance Emily Rigby says:

We believe there’s up to, and possibly exceeding, a million eligible patients in Australia.

Amazingly, Queensland’s medical cannabis industry is extremely new – as the first cannabis farm was only opened by Medifarm in August 2019. Cannatrek themselves have only been operating since October 2019. Despite this, Australia’s medical cannabis industry is already worth over $64 million.

Moving forward, Cannatrek is looking to distribute medical cannabis Australia wide. Earlier this June, they announced a new production deal with the THC Global Group. Through THC’s Tetra Health Group network, over 600 doctors will now be prescribing Cannatrek products.

In the next few years, Cannatrek is also planning on expanding into the European and Asia-Pacific region – made possible by new export laws approved in federal parliament last week.
