Medical cannabis company Cann Pharmaceuticals has lodged an application to build a multimillion-dollar production facility in the regional New South Wales town of Tamworth.

Cann Pharmaceuticals reportedly applied to the Tamworth Regional Council for permission to develop their new production facility in May. According to the application, the new facility would be worth over $7.8 million and would include medical cannabis cultivation and production facilities.

The plant would include two greenhouses (9,417m2 and 500m2), an administration building, a production facility, and a parking lot on land 21 kilometres from Tamworth. The production facility would be fitted with a drying room, cutting room, and packaging and distribution area.

Cann Pharmaceuticals plans to use the facility to expand their EP1 product, which is used for drug-resistant epilepsy. If it is developed, the plant will employ 15 people to grow, harvest, dry, and cure medical cannabis for EP1.

Cann Pharmaceuticals is an Israeli-Australian company that focuses on developing EP1 for treatment-resistant epilepsy and another product line for pain, autism, cancer-related pain, and neurological conditions. The company was first founded in Australia in 2016, making them one of Australia’s oldest medical cannabis companies.

In April this year, Cann Pharmaceuticals was acquired by Canndoc – an international cannabis company owned by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

As part of their application to Tamworth Regional Council, Cann Pharmaceuticals explained that the new plant will grow the medical cannabis industry while bringing jobs to the area.

The construction and operation of the development will secure permanent and part time employment, whilst providing a product that has rapidly become an Australian identified health solution for those in need.

If approved, this would be Cann Pharmaceutical’s second medical cannabis production facility in the region – as they have another facility at Kootingal. The Kootingal facility was given an $8 million grant in 2018. The region is also home to a medical cannabis production facility owned by ANTG.

The Tamworth Regional Council is currently considering Cann Pharmaceuticals’ application for the multimillion-dollar production facility.
