NSW set to decriminalise minor possession of illicit drugs

Despite their hard stance over the past years of shutting down music festivals, stationing drug sniffing dogs at train stations, and invasive strip searches, the NSW government is consider a major change.

The new policy would work under a three-chance system. The first time you're found in possession of a minor quantity of drugs you'll be given a warning, the second and third a fine.

Greens MP David Shoebridge has been campaigning for years for drug law reform, and he's welcomed the latest news with open arms.

It’s a major win for common sense. It’s a major win for young people who can go about their daily lives without being monstered by police.

Exact details of the potential policy changes are still to be worked out. And even though the cabinet endorsed the policy, support amongst Ministers was definitely not unanimous.

Decriminalisation for personal possession is a major step forward for the NSW government - and one finally taken in the right direction.
