How to make hemp chocolate chip cookies

Baking with hemp flour is becoming increasingly popular globally - meaning more Australians will be experimenting with hemp baking. Naturally, that puts hemp chocolate chip cookies on the menu.

Hemp flour is a relatively new hemp product that is made by stripping the oil content from hemp seeds. This mixture is then milled into a fine flour. Hemp flour is a nutritionally-dense source of protein, fibre and Omega 3.

Hemp flour and protein powder are quite different, though they have a similar green-twinge. Hemp protein powder is (usually) made by grinding up hemp seeds, meaning it has a higher oil quantity than hemp flour. 

Hemp flour is gluten-free and dairy-free. 

Recipe: Hemp Chocolate Chip Cookies 

Hemp flour has a slightly nutty taste, making it a great flour to use in chocolate chip cookies. Here's how I make hemp chocolate chip cookies. 

Ingredients:

• 120 grams of butter or margarine 
• ½ cup of caster sugar
• ½ cup of brown sugar 
• 1 egg 
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 250 grams dark chocolate chips
• 1 and ½ cups of hemp flour 

Method:

Step 1. Preheat your oven to 180° and line a tray with baking powder. 

Step 2. Soften your butter or margarine until it reaches room temperature. Cream butter, caster sugar and brown sugar in your bowl until the mixture is slightly fluffy. 

Step 3. Break the egg and stir it into the creamed mixture. Add salt, and stir gently. 

Step 4. Add chocolate chips and stir the mixture until the chips are distributed evenly. Add your hemp flour ½ cup at a time, and mix gently until the dough is thoroughly combined. 

Step 5. Take 1 tablespoon of cookie mixture at a time and roll it into a ball. Squish the ball flat using your fingers or a fork. 

Step 6. Bake cookies for 8 - 10 minutes, then allow them to cool for a further 5 minutes. 

Step 7. Enjoy!

NOTE: If you like your cookies to be soft and chewy on the inside, bake cookies at a reduced heat of 160°.
