Jay-Z launches cannabis line ‘Monogram’

Music mogul Jay-Z has just announced the launch of his very own cannabis line - Monogram.

Jay-Z took to his music streaming app Tidal last Friday, announcing the release of his cannabis line through playlist “Monogram: Sounds from the Grow Room.” The playlist features tracks from The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Rihanna and Bob Marley, among others.

Monogram’s selection of cannabis strains are expected to be released in the coming weeks, with no reefer-release date currently set. Jay-Z is producing Monogram’s cannabis in partnership with California-based cannabis company Caliva. Who also welcomed Jay-Z as its Chief Brand Strategist in July 2019 as part of a move to make marijuana mainstream.

Over the weekend, Caliva CEO, Dennis O’Malley, celebrated Monogram’s launch as a new chapter for the US cannabis industry, telling CNN:

We think this is a sea of change in terms of visibility to the industry. We take this partnership with a lot of responsibility.

Although activists are pushing for full cannabis legalisation in 2021, recreational cannabis is currently only legal in 11 US states (and Washington DC). The US Democratic Party has promised full cannabis decriminalization if presidential candidate, Joe Biden, wins the upcoming 2020 election.

Jay-Z isn’t the first household name to enter the growing cannabis industry. Whoopi Goldberg, Snoop Dogg, and even Martha Stewart, have previously launched their own cannabis lines. It is unclear whether Monogram will be available internationally.
